Cosmetic Canthoplasty (Almond Eye, Fox Eye, Cat Eye)
Who wouldn’t want more attractive eyes and deeper gazes?
One of the increasingly popular procedures in recent times is canthoplasty, also known as almond eye, fox eye, or cat eye surgery.
Although canthoplasty, when referred to as almond eye or cat eye surgery, may seem like it is something solely for aesthetic purposes, such operations have long been used in the medical field by oculoplastic and facial plastic surgeons for health-related issues. Canthoplasty has been a surgical option for many years in cases such as reconstruction after tumors or trauma, and for rehabilitation of conditions that prevent eyelid closure, like facial paralysis (facial palsy).
In this context, we want to focus more on cosmetic canthoplasty, which is performed primarily for aesthetic purposes. The goal of cosmetic canthoplasty is to change the angle of the eyelids surrounding the eyes, giving them a more slanted and attractive appearance. To achieve this, adjustments are made to the tendons (canthal tendons) that anchor the eyelids to the skull bones. These adjustments may involve tightening, folding, or strengthening the tendons. As a result, the eyelids become more angled, creating a almond-like or cat – fox eye shape.
This procedure provides sharper, more striking looks!
Canthoplasty surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia through small, aesthetic incisions made at the edges of the eyelids, near the crow’s feet area. The purpose of the procedure is to intervene in the tendons where the eyelids attach to the skull. By adjusting these structures (canthoplasty), the shape and angles of the eyelids can be modified.
Patients are usually discharged on the same day, and their eyes are not covered. The aesthetic stitches placed along the eyelid margins are removed within 7–10 days. Scarring at the incision sites is rare. This procedure provides highly durable results, maintaining its structure for decades.
Canthoplasty (almond eye, cat eye) procedures have recently become increasingly popular for aesthetic purposes, in addition to their medical applications. For this reason, any individual over the age of 18 who is physically and mentally healthy can undergo cosmetic canthoplasty surgery. However, as with other procedures around the eyes and face, it is crucial to select a method suitable for the patient’s facial structure and approach the eyes and the surrounding delicate tissues with care and precision. This ensures more successful, lasting, and trouble-free surgical outcomes.
For a procedure like canthoplasty, which significantly affects both aesthetic appearance and functional outcomes, working with a surgeon who has expertise in facial and periocular tissues and substantial surgical experience increases the chances of success and reduces the likelihood of unpleasant surprises.
